Toddler Transition: Outfits That Survive Crawling, Walking, and the Terrible Twos Messes ♡

One day your baby is happily scooting across the floor on their belly, and the next they’re pulling up on everything in sight. Then suddenly they’re toddling around like a tiny drunk sailor, leaving a trail of snacks, spit-up, and mystery stains in their wake. The toddler transition hits fast, doesn’t it? We’ve been there with Gabby & Lou, and let me tell you: the right outfits make all the difference between “this is adorable chaos” and full-on wardrobe meltdowns.
Today I’m sharing our favorite Gabby Lou pieces that are built for every stage of toddler life: buttery-soft Peruvian Pima cotton that holds up to crawling knees, walking wobbles, and those epic terrible twos messes. Pieces that feel special but are tough enough for real life.

The Crawling Stage: Knee-Friendly & Easy Diaper Changes
When your little one is army-crawling or just starting to get on all fours, you need outfits that protect those sweet knees while making diaper changes quick and fuss-free. Our Short Playsuit ($33) and Ruffle Romper ($39) have been absolute lifesavers here.
The Short Playsuit is lightweight, breathable, and has plenty of stretch for those deep crawls. The leg snaps make changes a breeze, even when your wiggly little love is trying to roll away mid-change. The Ruffle Romper (hello, fluttery ruffle sleeves and coconut buttons) adds the cutest vintage charm while the soft Pima cotton cushions little knees beautifully. Layer with a onesie underneath on cooler days for extra softness and easy temperature control.
First Steps & Walking: Freedom to Move & Twirl
Once those first wobbly steps happen, everything changes. Your toddler suddenly wants to run (or attempt to), squat, climb, and explore; and they need clothes that move with them instead of restricting them.
Our Stone Overalls ($48) are a mama favorite for this stage. The wide leg openings give plenty of room for chubby toddler thighs and movement. Pair them with a short-sleeve onesie for the ultimate easy, cute look. They wash beautifully after park dirt and grass stains, and the Pima cotton stays soft wash after wash.
For your girly girl who loves to twirl, the Baby Blues Smocked Dress ($54) or Smocked Angel Wing Dress ($48) with puff sleeves and Peter Pan collars are twirl-tested winners. The smocking gives stretch across the chest for easy dressing, and the full skirt allows full range of motion without riding up.

Surviving the Terrible Twos Messes
Toddlers + snacks + markers + mud = inevitable chaos. This is where heirloom-quality Pima cotton really shines. Our fabrics are more durable than standard cotton, resist pilling, and release most stains with a quick wash (cold water & gentle cycle is your best friend).
The Ruffle Romper and Short Playsuit have become our go-to “mess-proof” uniforms. The coconut buttons and snap closures mean you can strip them off fast when disaster strikes. The Stone Overalls are fantastic for outdoor play because the bib front catches crumbs and the fabric holds up to repeated washing without losing shape or softness.
Why Our 100% Peruvian Pima Cotton is the Real MVP
Pima cotton has longer fibers than regular cotton, which means:
- Ultra-soft against sensitive toddler skin
- Naturally hypoallergenic and breathable (no overheating during active play)
- Exceptionally durable: pieces actually get softer with wear
- Holds color beautifully and resists shrinking
- Made to be passed down (yes, even after all the terrible twos messes!)
My Top Mama Hacks for Toddler Outfit Survival
- Keep a spare romper or overalls & onesie in the diaper bag, blowouts and spills wait for no one.
- Choose light colors (like our Stone or Blush) for summer, darker tones for winter messes.
- Wash everything inside out on gentle and air dry when possible to preserve those pretty ruffles and smocking.
- Embrace the mess! Some of our favorite photos are the “after snack time” ones.
Sweet mamas, the toddler years fly by in a blur of first steps, giggles, and yes: lots of laundry. Dressing your little love in quality, heirloom pieces that can actually survive the journey makes it all a little sweeter (and a lot cuter).
