The newborn essentials checklist: what you actually need (and what you can skip)

Welcoming a newborn is one of life's most exciting moments, but walking into a baby store can feel overwhelming. Here's a practical, no-fluff guide to the gear that truly matters in those first weeks.

When you're expecting, it's tempting to stock up on every cute item you see. But the truth is, newborns need surprisingly little. We've put together this list to help you focus on the essentials that make life easier; so you can spend less time stressing about stuff and more time soaking in those precious early moments.

Sleep essentials

Safe sleep space

A firm, flat sleep surface is non-negotiable. A bassinet or crib with a snug-fitting mattress is the safest option. Skip the soft bumpers, pillows, and positioners; baby's sleep space should be bare.

Swaddle blankets

A good set of muslin swaddle blankets is one of the most versatile things you'll own. They're great for swaddling, nursing covers, tummy time, and everything in between. Stock 4–6 to stay ahead of laundry.

White noise machine

Babies are used to the loud, whooshing environment of the womb. A white noise machine can help them settle faster and sleep longer; and you'll be grateful for it during nap time.

Feeding must-haves

Nursing pillow

Whether you're breastfeeding or bottle feeding, a good nursing pillow saves your arms and back during those frequent feeds. It also doubles as tummy time support as baby grows.

Bottles & nipples

Even if you plan to breastfeed, having a few bottles on hand is smart. I used to pump some for nighttime so my husband could take on a couple of feedings and I'd get a decent night's sleep. Start with a small set and see what your baby prefers before buying in bulk; babies can be picky!

Burp cloths

You will use more burp cloths than you ever thought possible. Aim for at least 10–12. The more, the better.

Diapering basics

Diapers & wipes

Stock a small amount of newborn-size diapers before birth; babies grow fast and some skip the newborn size entirely. Wipes, on the other hand, you'll always use. Buy in bulk.

Changing pad

A portable changing pad is more practical than a full changing table for many families. It can be used anywhere in the house and travels well.

Diaper cream

A gentle zinc oxide diaper cream is a new parent staple. Apply at the first sign of redness to prevent diaper rash before it starts.

On-the-go gear

Infant car seat

This is one item you cannot skip; you'll need it before leaving the hospital. Make sure it's properly installed and check that it's not expired (yes, car seats have expiration dates!).

Baby carrier or wrap

A soft structured carrier or stretchy wrap lets you keep baby close while having both hands free. It's a lifesaver for fussy periods and getting things done around the house.

Stroller

You don't need the most expensive stroller on the market. Think about your lifestyle; do you walk on city sidewalks, trails, or mostly drive? Let that guide your choice.

Pro tip: Before buying anything, ask friends or family with babies what they actually used. The gear that gets rave reviews online sometimes sits unused — and the simple things end up being the most loved.

Remember, no checklist can fully prepare you for the beautiful chaos of having a newborn. Trust your instincts, keep things simple, and know that you're doing an amazing job.
