(because the first birthdays deserve all the ruffles & frosting)
Hi sweet mamas! Anne here. We just survived Lou’s fifth cake smash session (yes, I do one every year because I’m extra like that), and I’m spilling ALL my secrets so your baby’s first birthday photos turn out magazine-worthy, even if you’re just using your phone in the backyard.

1. The outfit formula that never fails
- Top half: smocked dress or ruffled romper (our Ruffle Romper is literally made for this)
- Bottom half: bare chubby legs = heart explosion
- Head: The biggest bow you own. Go bigger than you think you should (overcompensating since my kids wouldn't wear one).
- After the smash: Have a backup “clean” dress ready for family photos (because frosting in the hair bows is cute exactly once).
2. Cake hacks that save your sanity
- Order a 4- or 5-inch “smash cake” from your local grocery store bakery; ask for barely any icing on the sides (more for baby to grab).
- Want pastel frosting? Bring your own food coloring and have them tint it soft pink, butter yellow, or lavender.
- Pro tip: Chill the cake for 30 minutes before the shoot — it smashes better and makes bigger frosting chunks.
3. Setups that look expensive (but cost almost nothing)
Classic Gabby Lou vibe:
White sheet or faux fur rug on the grass or living room floor
Giant helium “ONE” balloon (tie it low so it floats just above baby’s head)
Scatter a few fresh flowers or paper butterflies around the edge
Optional backdrop: hang a ruffled bedsheet or $15 fabric from Hobby Lobby on the fence
4. Color palette ideas we’re obsessed with
Strawberry Dream: pinks + reds + white cake with strawberries on top
Vintage Lemon: soft yellows, cream, real lemons sliced as props
Boho Rainbow: pastel frosting layers + dried pampas grass
Classic Southern: all white cake + baby in our Smocked angel wing Dress (timeless!)
5. Timing is everything
Schedule the smash for right after a nap and a full bottle/sippy. A hangry baby + cake = tears. A happy, fed baby + cake = pure magic.
6. My secret weapon props
Vintage high chair (Facebook Marketplace finds: tiny wooden chair or antique suitcase
Wooden “ONE” sign
Fresh blooms in baby’s hair bow (just tuck them in, lasts about 10 minutes but SO worth it)
7. Getting the Money Shots
First taste face (priceless)
Both hands in the cake up to the elbows
Looking up at you with frosting everywhere
The moment they put both hands and feet in the entire cake and start spreading it around (happens every time and it’s hilarious)
8. Cleanup trick
Lay a cheap clear plastic tablecloth under everything. When the smash is over, wrap baby in it like a burrito and carry straight to the bath. Zero mess on the grass or carpet!

Tag us @gabbyloubaby when you do your smash; I repost my favorites every weekend and I can’t wait to see your frosting-covered cutie!
